Chapter 5

Sammy was having fun in the yard. He’d never had a place where he could just sit in the grass and watch the trees go back and forth. It was relaxing. It was something he’d been doing since they’d come back from New York three days ago.

Just as he was closing his eyes to take a nap, he heard a commotion. Sammy wasn’t entirely sure what that word meant, but his Grandma Morgan said it a lot, and he’d been trying it out for himself. Looking around, he didn’t see anything until he saw two big dogs chasing something near the tree line.

He wasn’t stupid, thinking he could take on two large dogs, but as soon as he saw Mr. Weeds, he knew he had to do something. Picking up a huge stick, he started swatting it at the dogs to make them back off. Once they were back far enough, he put Mr. Weeds into his shirt pocket and tried his best to run them off. The dogs were not having it.

“Faeries? I need some help.” He screamed it two more times before they came to help him. “They’ve hurt Mr. Weeds. Can you keep them from coming after me while I find him some help? I don’t know how hurt he is, but I know he’s bleeding.”

Before he could get to the house with the little gnome, the dogs were running off. Two more faeries came to join him on the deck as he pulled the little man from his pocket. It was much worse than he’d thought.

“What can I do to help him? He’s my friend.” Pixie, one of the several faeries that had come to help him, told him to call on Tellus. “I don’t know how to do that. Please, we have to save him.”

Mr. Weeds’ body had been bitten several times. His beard was full of blood too. What scared him the most was that his leg looked like it had been nearly torn off. Crying a little but still talking to the little man, he did what he was told to call on Tellus.

“Come to me, Mother of the Earth. I need your help for one of your own.” When Pixie nodded to him as he stood in the middle of the yard with his shoes off, he decided to tell her more. “Hurry, please. Mr. Weeds is in terrible shape.”

“Let me have a look at him, young Sammy.” The woman just appeared in front of him, and he put out his hands to show her his friend. “My goodness. He is in bad shape. I believe I can help him, but I shall need your help.”

“Anything. You need me to give you my life. I’ll do it. He’s been the best friend I could ever have. I love him.” Tellus said she’d only need a drop of his blood but was proud of him for being willing to sacrifice himself for such an important person. “He’s important to me too. Mr.
